Miss Izzy's Schoolhouse

Located at  the end of Farrington Lane, Miss Izzy's Schoolhouse, now approximately 104 years old, was an outright donation to the National Trust by Miss Ivy Powell, sister of Isabel Powell, better known as Miss Izzy. Unfortunately, the building was destroyed by hurricane Ivan in September 2004. The site is therefore closed until further notice.

The building and site were historically significant because of their symbolic association with private school education in the mid 1940's.  Although public/government schools had started to operate from around 1921, many parents still preferred to send their children to smaller neighbourhood private schools to which they has grown accustomed.

The schoolhouse was an excellent exampleof an original wattle and daub, cabin style home with the classic hip roof.  The roof was originally covered with wooded shingles and portions of this remain intact, covered by a newer zinc roof.  The structure stands on well-preserved iron-wood posts.  the interior consists of three main rooms: a hall in the centre; and one room on either side, each running the full width of the home.  Additionally, the site contains a number of mature indigenous trees including mahogany, Lignum vitae, seagrapes and ginep.
